How energy-saving technology can be applied in outdoor Led billboard

Electronic digital led billboards are widely applied in digital out of home advertising these days. The size of the led billboard becomes larger and larger, and the pixel pitch becomes smaller and smaller. The images and videos turn into more and more clearer. Advertisers gain much from modern Led billboard technology. At the same time, the power energy consumed by the led billboard is always rising. It means that the cost goes higher on the digital billboard. Is there way to design the energy-saving outdoor led billboard? The answer is YES.

Step-1: Select higher efficient switching power supply

The efficiency of common switching power supply is only 75%-80%. It means that 20%-25% of the power supply output from the SPS is converted to heat.

The efficiency of better switching power supply can reach 85%-95%. Consequently, only 5%-15 of the power is converted to heat. Selection of higher efficiency of SPS is the first factor to design an energy-saving outdoor led billboard.

Step-2: Select energy-saving IC drivers

The quantity of electric current inside the led chips is controlled by the IC drivers. Better IC driver can control the current with great accuracy. Common IC drivers will roughly control the current flow in the led chips. Here we recommend the following two brands that has better energy-saving IC drivers:

a. Macroblock, which is famous semiconductor firm from Taiwan province, China;

b. Chipone, comes from Sanxi province, China

Generally speaking, the output voltage of the power supply is 5VDC. In order to cut down the cost of power of the led display billboard, 4.2VDC or 3.8VDC switching power supply and energy-saving IC drivers are applied at the same time. Let make an example to show:

i. Common one square meter P10 led billboard display need 120A to drive in one hour with a 5VDC switching power supply; the efficiency of the power supply is 80%; then 1sq.m P10 led billboard can consume:

5V x 120A = 600W ; 600W/80%=750W

ii. High efficiency power supply: efficiency rate; 90%; 4.2VDC output SPS and high accurate IC drivers are applied:

4.2V x 120A= 504W; 504W/90%=560W

iii. Energy saving rate: (750W-560W)/750W=25.33%

In fact, if high efficient IC drivers were applied, the quantity of the electric current that one square meter P10 Led display billboard will be much smaller than 120A. Suppose it is 9A:

4.2V x 90A=378W; (750w-378W)/750W=49.6%. WOW, nearly half cost is cut down!

Step-3: High luminous and larger-sized led chips

Theoretically & ideally, 1kwh electric power can generate 683 lumen brightness. However, currently, in our real environment, only 100-200 lumen can be applied commercially. Most of the power is converted into heat during the emitting the electric charge.

Smaller-sized led chips will need more electric current to generate the same quantity brightness. Larger-sized led chips will need less current to generate the same brightness. The size of the led chips and its efficiency are the main factors to design an energy-saving outdoor led billboard panel. In the Led industry, Nichia, Cree and Osram act well in the size of the led chips. Epistar from Taiwan also have larger-sized led chips.

Step-4: Cabinet structure design

It is hard to measure the goodness of the structure design of the cabinet for the outdoor led billboard. All the electronics in the panel will produce heat. The designer has to take heat dissipation into consideration. The heat inside the panel will affect the efficiency of all the electronics. The panel itself also absorb heat from the sun in the day time. Consequently, the heat has to be brought out by the structure. If less heat are generated, less heat will be considered to taken out.

In the end, we conclude that energy-saving outdoor led billboard can designed with high efficient switching power supply, more accurate IC drivers and larger-sized led chips.Structure and PCB design are also two factors that will affect the heat dissipation of the panel.
